Art Walk, Mural and Shows

Wow, no updates in forever. Busy with art, getting interviews posted on OOPM and various other parts of life.

Underground recently hosted their second Art Walk over the past weekend. It was a great turn out with lots of people, artists and fantastic weather. The main problem was every now and then you’d get a slight gust of wind which caused several artists to have their artwork knocked over and it was especially scary when you’d hear glass shattered. I sold a few prints and buttons, as well as purchased some prints from artists there. Thank you to everyone who bought something, stopped to look at my work and gave me comments. There will be hosting another one in September. they posted a bunch of pictures which can be viewed here.

If you’re into the murals of Philadelphia or even the Phillies then you may know about the Phillies mural that will be completed this year on South 24th St. (If you don’t, view the details here) They recently had a sweepstakes for fans to enter to be the one lucky fan who gets their face painted into the mural and well guess who magically won? I DID! I’m so excited as I never thought I’d win it. It’ll be exciting, soon I’ll be getting more details and such on the process I believe.

Also, since I just recently got asked about if I’m in any upcoming art shows and I will be in a few so details for all of those listed below.

SXSW

Honestly, I didn’t go to Austin soon enough and came home too soon. (Originally was supposed to be Saturday then got switched till Friday but I learned my lesson for next time!)

SXSW was amazing, although overwhelming so it was barely planned out at all although I wish it would have been at least somewhat. I got to see a bunch of bands, random rappers, comedy shows, roller derby practice, etc. And didn’t get to see other things to due to leaving early or it not working out such as Andrew WK, Workaholics House Party and The Used.

Friday I got to interview a bunch of bands who were all so nice. I was nervous since it was my first time doing any interviews in person but it was great. My nerves got eased by June Divided being my first interview even though they weren’t originally supposed to be, that helped a ton. Everyone was all laid back so it was more of a conversation rather than interviewing. One thing though I wish I would have had someone with me to take photos while interviewing since I was too occupied with talking. I was going to set up my computer and have them take silly photos through photo booth but I was outside so my computer would have probably died before I finished possibly.

Thank you to all of the bands that I got to speak to, especially for your cds and everything else you guys gave to me.

I also got an amazing tattoo by Zach at Triple Crown Tattoo. I’ll post more on all of this stuff once I get back into the swing of things which needs to be asap. And post links to all interviews once I go through them and post ‘em on Out of Print Mag.

Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records & Motion City Soundtrack’s The Boombox Generation Announce Official SXSW Making Moves Showcase!

Check Out Motion City Soundtrack’s Making Moves Announcement here.

WHAT: DREXEL UNIVERSITY’S MAD DRAGON RECORDS & MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK’S THE BOOMBOX GENERATION OFFICIAL SXSW MAKING MOVES SHOWCASE

WHERE: CLIVE BAR | 609 DAVIS STREET | AUSTIN, TX

WHEN: MARCH 14TH | 8PM

Philadelphia, PA – February 29, 2012 – Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records (MDR) and Motion City Soundtrack’s recently launched record label, The Boombox Generation, are pleased to announce the official Making Moves kick-off showcase at the annual South by Southwest Music Conference in Austin, Texas. The event will take place on Wednesday, March 14that Clive Bar, with the first performance starting at 8PM. Motion City Soundtrack will headline the official Making Moves showcase with all of the emerging artists in the series (The Company We Keep, Brick + Mortar, Goldrush, The Skies Revolt, and A Great Big Pile of Leaves) performing during the evening.

Making Moves is a series of 7″ single releases by emerging artists curated by Motion City Soundtrack. The singles will be released on limited edition 7″ vinyl and digitally via MAD Dragon Records and Motion City Soundtrack’s recently launched record label, The Boombox Generation. The Making Moves series will be distributed by the Alternative Distribution Alliance. Making Moves artists include: The Company We Keep (Detroit, MI), Brick + Mortar (Asbury Park, NJ), Goldrush (Richmond, VA), The Skies Revolt (Grand Rapids, MI) and A Great Big Pile of Leaves (Brooklyn, NY). Additionally, Motion City Soundtrack will contribute two new songs for the series. The Company We Keep will begin the schedule of artist releases on April 24th, 2012 and each additional artist will be released throughout the year.

Members of Motion City Soundtrack (Justin Pierre, Josh Cain, Matt Taylor, Jesse Johnson, and Tony Thaxton) produced all of the artists’ recordings between November 2011 and January 2012. The sessions took place at Drexel University’s studios in Philadelphia, PA with Drexel’s Music Industry Program alumni and undergraduate students, Lenny Skolnick, Dave Petit and Justin Chapman engineering the sessions. The recording process was documented by students from the Drexel Film & Video program for a documentary “Making Of” DVD that will accompany a box set including all titles and will be released in late 2012.

The project came together at the annual South By Southwest Music Conference (SXSW) in March 2011. According to Jesse Johnson of MCS, “Last year, I was at SXSW with the band I manage, A Great Big Pile of Leaves, and Terry Tompkins attended their showcase. Johnson said, “After a few emails and phone calls, the Making Moves project was hatched; it went from simply doing a A Great Big Pile of Leaves seven inch to Motion City Soundtrack curating the series.” Matt Taylor of MCS adds, “I’m hoping that people will be inspired by the collaboration and the many different factions involved with the series. We came together with a common goal of releasing music that we’re excited about. We want those who hear it to share in this excitement with us.”

“It is a privilege for the students in the Music Industry Program and MAD Dragon Records to work with Motion City Soundtrack (MCS) for the Making Moves Series,” said Terry Tompkins, Associate Teaching Professor of the Music Industry Program and Managing Director of the Music Industry Program Entities at Drexel University. “This partnership provides a rare opportunity for our students to work with an accomplished and recognized band. Their (MCS) interest and enthusiasm to work with our students has exceeded our wildest expectations.”

Phils Community Paint Day

According to uwishunu one of the Mural Arts artists headed down to Spring Training. The Phils took a day off for a community paint day for their 8-story mural that is expected to be completed this summer. I personally can’t wait to see the mural when it’s completed and think it’s pretty awesome that the current Phils roster, broadcasters, etc are a part of the process.

We’ll Be Back, Soonish.

You may have noticed I’ve started changing the layout of the site and adding new pages. Some of the new additions are:

  • Studio Visits (Got an art studio? Let me know.)
  • Submissions
  • Calendar (Submit details/press releases for art events.)

I’m writing up interviews and contacting artists about studio visits. While also over the next month heading to SXSW, etc. I recently attended the Tattoo Convention in Philadelphia and there was a lot of great tattoo artists and artists in general. I ended up not getting a new tattoo but bought some great prints and stickers by Gustavo Rimada and Emi Boz.

I’ve been in some shows lately such as State of the State and Jinxed’s Annual Heart Show, possibly Masthead’s Vices Show next month too. (If I ever decide on a vice, so many choices.) I will also be at Smithville, NJ in April for Underground’s annual art walk. Spaces are still available and it’s free. So if you’re an artist sign up or come check out all the other artists and do some networking. More information is located here.

Hiatus

I’m putting this site on a bit of a hiatus for the time being. (Hopefully only a month at most)

I’ve had it since December 2010 and well it’s always been just all over the place with nothing truly consistent. I want to sit down and figure out exactly what I want this to be. Research other art blogs more rather than just reading them to get inspiration about what I like and feel would work here as well.

Of course I want to use this site to promote my own work, to promote others (famous or trying to get there), shows, art I come across in my travels, interviews and I’m sure the list can go on.

I want this site to be the best I can make it and honestly it’s just not right now.

Please feel free to email me comments, questions, thoughts and ideas to info@artjarstudios.com or leave it on our facebook.

Shows & Collabs

My time at Second State Press came to an end about a week ago, sadly. I was kinda of a printing machine during the last two weeks of my time there. Creating new work and working on collaborations with my friend’s band Good Graces and The Air Rat, some of which included glow in the dark ink.

As for shows, two of my pieces are still available from the show at Slingluff Gallery (one includes twinkling led lights!)

Upcoming Shows I’m in:
- Heart Show at Jinxed
- State of the State at Second State Press

Also, I have a dribbble invite, if you’re interested please send a url of your work to info@artjarstudios.com

Infamous Mag at Art Basel

Even though Art Basel was a month ago, a lot of photos and videos are still coming out such as the case with this video below. Infamous Mag had a section at the art show in Co11ective which Yis Goodwin (NoseGo) had work in. The video features their wall of the show and all the live painting that was going on around the Kohn Compound and other parts of Wynwood.

Catch Up

I’ve been working on some interviews, it’s tough. I don’t want to ask the same questions that have been asked over and over again because honestly who wants to read that? Is there an artist you want interviewed on here? Have questions for them too?! Then be sure to leave a comment or send it over to info@artjarstudios.com

I’ve been busy printing away, trying to print as much as I can before my FOB holder position ends, which is at the end of this week! I also purchased glow in the dark ink that I can’t wait to use!

AND I’ve recently become a contributor to Out Of Print Mag, so be sure to bookmark it and start reading it.

I’ve also decided that I will be going to Austin, TX for SXSW. If you’re going as well and would like to meet up just feel free to shoot me an email.

I have some sugar skull stickers left, so if you want some before they run out send over your address and I’ll get them sent out to you. I’ll be working on a new design soon I hope to be printed before I go off to Austin.
